Cardozo School of Law Launches Technology-Focused Programs, Tech Talks Series
October 13, 2014 – New York, NY – Cardozo School of Law has announced multiple new programs focused on technology, law and business this fall, designed to prepare students for legal challenges brought by the rapidly changing tech world.
“Technology is transforming both law and business,” said Dean Matthew Diller. “We built these programs to create opportunities for law students to become innovative leaders in technology law.”
Cardozo Law’s new tech-focused programs include:
- The Cardozo Data Law Initiative (CDLI)
- The Tech Startup Clinic
- Cardozo Law Tech Talks
The Cardozo Data Law Initiative (CDLI) provides experience in data privacy issues, which have rocked the financial world in recent months. In addition to coursework in data privacy, CDLI offers courses in social media law, information governance, e-discovery and cybersecurity. Patrick Burke, counsel at Reed Smith LLP, is executive director of the CDLI.
“The impetus for the CDLI came from businesses who wanted lawyers with training and familiarity in big data law and technology,” said Burke. “Working with advisors from business, law and government, CDLI is turning the law school model around to position Cardozo as a feeder school to corporations, government, and others who are hungry for a new generation of tech-savvy data lawyers.”
Other CDLI courses include Corporate Internal Investigations; Digital Evidence & Computer Forensics; Information Governance Law; Internet Law; Law of Surveillance; Privacy Law; Social Media Law; Technology Policy; and White Collar Crime.
The Tech Startup Clinic at Cardozo Law was designed to provide legal strategy and counsel to startup tech companies, giving students hands-on experience in the myriad legal and business strategy challenges they face.
“New York City is one of the fastest-growing technology hubs in the U.S.,” said clinic director Aaron Wright.“But startups can fall into legal traps that lawyers who think like entrepreneurs can help them avoid.” Wright is a Cardozo graduate who co-founded the sports website ArmchairGM and sold it to Wikia.
The Cardozo Law Tech Talks series premiered in October, providing a public forum for crucial topics in technology law, including surveillance law, regulating digital currency, e-discovery law, and cybersecurity and privacy:
