MICHEL ROSENFELD NAMED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OF LAW AND COMPARATIVE DEMOCRACY

June 22, 2015 – New York, NY – Cardozo Law Professor Michel Rosenfeld has been appointed a University Professor at Yeshiva University, becoming one of a prestigious few to be granted this honor for achieving outstanding goals in teaching, publications and research. Professor Rosenfeld is the Justice Sydney L. Robins Professor of Human Rights and the Director of the Program on Global Comparative Constitutional Theory. In addition to his existing titles, he will now also be a University Professor of Law and Comparative Democracy.

“Michel Rosenfeld is a world-class scholar, and I am delighted that he has been chosen for this great honor,” said Cardozo Dean Matthew Diller. “He is a pioneer in the fields of comparative constitutional law and legal philosophy, and has built a reputation as one of the leading scholars in the world in these areas.”

Professor Rosenfeld is a world-renowned scholar in the fields of comparative constitutional law and legal philosophy, and has been a member of Cardozo Law’s full-time faculty since 1988. He had a major role in the growth and development of comparative constitutional law in the U.S. over the past two decades. He instituted Cardozo's Program on Global and Comparative Constitutional Theory, which is devoted to the interdisciplinary, international, and comparative study of changing trends in constitutional justice, the relation between the individual and the state, and evolving conceptions of and approaches to fundamental rights.

"I commend Professor Rosenfeld's distinguished research portfolio in areas of constitutional law, citizenship, and human rights, and am delighted that he is being recognized for his outstanding research and exemplary teaching at Cardozo," said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Selma Botman.

Professor Rosenfeld was the second American law professor to win the prestigious Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair at the University of Paris I in 2013. While in France, he convened an exchange between Justice Stephen Breyer and a French counterpart on the U.S. Supreme Court and its French equivalent’s consideration of foreign constitutional cases. Among his many honors, in 2004 he received the French government's highest and most prestigious award, the Legion of Honor.

“Professor Rosenfeld is a fitting choice for the honor of University Professor,” said Cardozo’s incoming Dean Melanie Leslie. “He has made significant and lasting contributions to the fields of comparative constitutional law and legal philosophy, as well as to the Cardozo Law and Yeshiva University communities. We are proud to have him on our faculty.”
