August 19, 2013 - Dean Matthew Diller has announced that Katharine Tinto has joined the full-time faculty at Cardozo School of Law as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law. Professor Tinto will work with the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic.
“Katie’s scholarship, her experience as a public defender, and her teaching record make her ideal for our clinical program,” said Dean Diller. “We continue to expand our clinical offerings to help students be practice ready. I’m delighted to have her here.”
Prior to her Cardozo appointment, she was the associate director of the Lawyering Program and an acting assistant professor of lawyering at NYU School of Law. Previously, Professor Tinto worked for over seven years as a public defender in Los Angeles County and was also the founder of a family violence prevention program in the East Palo Alto Police Department.
She will teach immigration law, and work with students in the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic to represent immigrants facing deportation. The clinic has made national headlines for its advocacy work on immigration reform.
Professor Tinto received her B.A. with honors and academic distinction from Stanford University in 1996 and her J.D. magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from NYU School of Law in 2001.
While at NYU Law, she was a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar, a Pomeroy Scholar, and served on the NYU Law Review. Upon graduation, Professor Tinto clerked for Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Her current scholarship focuses on the relationship between policing and criminal and immigration law.
