CARDOZO JOURNAL OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION TO HONOR JUDGE DANIEL WEINSTEIN WITH THE INTERNATIONAL ADVOCATE FOR PEACE AWARD
February 26, 2015 – New York, NY – The Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) will honor Hon. Daniel Weinstein (Ret.) with the 2014 International Advocate for Peace Award for his work as a pioneer in the advancement of mediation worldwide. A ceremony and reception in Judge Weinstein’s honor will be held at Cardozo School of Law on Monday, March 16, 2015.
The CJCR International Advocate for Peace Award celebrates individuals who embody a passion for and commitment to the pursuit of peace and the resolution of difficult international conflicts. Those awarded the prize present a speech about their peace efforts and vision at Cardozo Law.
Judge Weinstein was chosen for this honor for founding and supporting the Weinstein JAMS International Fellowship Program. The program, which began in 2008, has shepherded 61 fellows from 50 countries to study mediation and dispute resolution processes in the United States under the guidance of experienced JAMS panelists.
Previous recipients of the International Advocate for Peace Award include Richard C. Holbrooke, President Bill Clinton, Senator George Mitchell and Seeds of Peace, Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, Eve Ensler, Betty Kaari Murungi, Ambassador Dennis Ross, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Amira Dotan, Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat, Abigail Disney, John Marks, and President Jimmy Carter.
“Judge Weinstein is a pioneer in the field of mediation,” said Paula Shulman, editor-in-chief of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. “In selecting him for the 2014 Advocate for Peace Award, we honor a man whose commitment to peacemaking is an inspiration for mediators and for students of mediation. Judge Weinstein has built a high-level, international peacemaking community through the Weinstein Fellows, providing opportunities for dispute resolution scholars and professionals from around the globe to engage with one another, building networks in the United States and abroad, to advance dispute resolution globally.”
“I’m incredibly honored to receive this prestigious award from Cardozo,” said Judge Weinstein. “It’s quite humbling to know I’m following in the same footsteps as Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other distinguished peacemakers. The Weinstein-JAMS International Fellowship program has done amazing work to bring ADR and conflict resolution to the forefront of the global conversation and has created a platform that supports global efforts to resolve conflicts peacefully. I’m thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the Program.”
Judge Weinstein is internationally recognized as one of the premier mediators of complex, multi-party, high-stakes cases, both in the United States and abroad. He is a sought-after mediator in cross-border and cross-cultural matters, multinational financial disputes, international securities cases, international intellectual property matters, worldwide entertainment and sports cases, international anti-trust actions, and international environmental disputes. He also served as U.S. Special Representative in Bosnia for privatization to oversee a $14 billion transfer of funds to Muslims, Croats and Serbs (1999-2000), and is co-founder of Making Peace our Business, a nonprofit international dispute resolution forum.
“Judge Weinstein has created a unique worldwide institution dedicated to building an international cadre of talented mediators,” said Professor Lela Love, director of Cardozo Law’s Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution. “We have been lucky to be able to shepherd several Weinstein Fellows as they pursue scholarly projects at Cardozo, and the school has been enriched by their presence. I could not be more pleased with our editor’s choice for the 2014 International Advocate for Peace Award.”
